Le Grand Tarot Belline, Translated

Le Grand Tarot Belline is a 19th-century French tarot, and a historically significant entry in the history of cartomantic decks. In 2006, we were fortunate to receive an English translation of the original text accompanying the deck, provided by the late Paula Gaubert (a.k.a. Paula Goodman Wilder). This article is the long-overdue porting of that translation to our new website.

In A Wicked Pack of Cards – The Origins of the Occult Tarot by Decker, Depaulis, and Dummett, we learn that Le Grand Tarot Belline is a Tarot deck that was drawn by hand using pen and ink, around 1863 by Edmond Billaudot (1829-1881) (known as Magus Edmond). The decks name comes from Marcel Belline, who discovered the deck, marketed, and sold the printing rights to Grimaud, then donated the originals to the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires in Paris.

The deck is a wonderful synthesis (IMO) Etteilla, Éliphas Leví, and Paul Christian.

Each card is divided into four sections, upper and lower bands, and upper and lower fields.

The upper band contains Leví’s mundane kabalistic letter for the Majors on the left, the Gematria number, followed by Paul Christian astrological correspondences, and a sequence number (the entire deck is numerically sequenced 0-77).

Red Key-Words are inked on or near the top band, and reversed in the bottom band. These keywords owe their originations from Jeu Du Grand Etteilla.

The main field of the card is the illustration.

The bottom band of the card contains the card name.

The bottom field of the card contains a proverb specific to the card.

The suits are, and progress in the order of: Sceptres, Coupes, Glaives, and Sicles; Kings (Maître) to Valet (L’esclave), Ace (Un) to Ten (Dix).

An Epees is a fencing sword (very gentlemanly) and is made as a piercing weapon. A Glaive historically is a type of polearm, but in the nineteenth century became a French poetic term for a sword. Sicles translates to Shekel.

We are proud to present the translations for Le Grand Tarot Belline by Paula Goodman (aka Firemaiden on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum), beginning with the essay on the spare card, which we are told comes from a notebook of philosophical musings, by Edmond Billaudot.

Spare Card Essay 

La volonté de l’homme éclairée par la science et manifestée par l’action, crée la réalisation d’un pouvoir dont elle use ou abuse, dans le cercle infranchissable des lois universelles, selon sa bonne ou sa mauvaise inspiration. La volonté humaine ayant surmonté l’épreuve qui lui est imposée par la sagesse éternelle, entre par sa victoire en possession de l’œuvre qu’elle a créée. Elle fond son équilibre sur l’axe de la sagesse et tant qu’elle s’y maintient, elle domine la fortune. La force de l’homme, sanctifiée dans son usage par le sacrifice qui se dévoue, triomphe du sceptre de la mort, et sa divine transformation oppose la réalité de son éternelle inititative à l’éternel mensonge de la fatalité. Dans la série du temps toute ruine est le piédestal d’une espérance, mais toute espérance terrestre correspond à une déception. L’homme aspire sans cesse à ce qui lui échappe, et le soleil du bonheur ne se lève pour lui que derrière la tombe après le renouvellement de son être qui l’élèvera à une sphère plus haute de volonté, d’intelligence, et d’action. La volonté de l’homme qui veut le mal est une abdication de la liberté qui se voue à l’expiation. La volonté de l’homme qui opère le bien est une apthéose de la liberté qui conquiert la couronne des mages dans l’empire de la lumière éternelle, devenue sa récompense.

C’est pour cela qu’il est écrit sur la couronne du sphinx : Gloire à l’Eternelle toute puissance dans la splendeur des hauteurs infinies, et paix dans ce crépuscule des profondeurs aux esprits de bonne volonté. Cest la règle de la volonté de l’homme, il n’y a point de prédestination absolue.

The will of man, enlightened by knowledge (science) and manifested by action, creates the realisation of a power which it can use or abuse in the impenetrable circle of universal laws, according to its good or bad inspiration. Human will having overcome the trial (test) imposed on it by eternal wisdom, comes, through its victory, into possession of the work it has created. It (human will) founds its equilibrium on the axis of wisdom and as long as it remains there, dominates fortune. The strength of man, sanctified in its use by devoted sacrifice triumps over the sceptre of death ; and its divine transformation opposes the reality of its eternal initiative to the eternal lie of fate (predestination). In the series of time, all ruin is the pedestal of hope, but all earthly hope corresponds to a dissapointment/deception. Man aspires incessantly to that which escapes him, and the sun of happiness (good fortune) rises for him only behind the grave after the renewal of his being, which elevates him to a sphere higher than will, intelligence or action. The will of man who wishes for evil, is an abdication of the freedom which is dedicated to atonement (expiation). The will of man who strives to do good is an apotheosis of freedom which conquers the crown of the magii in the empire of eternal light, which becomes his reward.

This is why on the crown of the sphinx is written : Glory to the eternal all powerful one in the splendor of infinity on high, and peace in this dawning of the abyssal depths to the spirits of good will. It is the rule of the will of man. There is no absolute predestination.
