Macabre Tarot

The Macabre Tarot pulls off the dual characteristics of being quirky and unsettling at the same time. The illustrations are simple — rendered in black and white with gold accents – and not overly cluttered with symbolism that would detract from the mood the imagery is attempting to set. Many of the traditional card titles have been swapped out for other terms that are intended to mesh more closely with the theme of the deck. Some examples: “The Empress“ becomes “The Ethereal“; “The Emperor“ becomes “The Rigid“; the suit of Wands becomes the suit of Bones; Pages become “Terror”; “ Queens“ become “Haunting“; etc. The cards are adorned with gilt gold edging. And we would be remiss not to mention the kitschy but totally on-point packaging, employing a hinge-lid coffin-shaped box with electronic sound that triggers a creaking noise when the box is opened.
