A self-proclaimed "Tarot for Magi by Magi", the Mutational Alchemy Tarot is aimed squarely at those who are seriously pursuing occult studies. The imagery and much of the philosophy is clearly inspired by Crowley's work -- including Crowley's later proclamation that "Tzaddi is not The Star" and his subsequent claim that the positions of the Emperor and Star cards should be reversed. To that end, The Star is numbered IV here, and The Emperor is numbered XVII. Interestingly, however, the deck does not adopt Crowley's adherence to the Marseille ordering for Strength and Justice, using instead the Waite-Smith ordering of VIII for Strength and XI for Justice. Furthermore, the deck retains the designation of "King" for the topmost court cards, instead of Crowley's use of the title "Knight" for the same cards. Finally, the deck uses the unusual designation of "Alembics" for the Cups suit.

The artwork itself uses a blend of many different elements, from Egyptian to east Asian to cyberpunk. The court cards display various I Ching patterns in their corners, while the minors include alchemical, astrological, I Ching, and Sacred Geometry associations.
