According to the publisher, the word "Sortilegium" refers to card reading for spellcasting and divination. Colombian artist Natalia Vélez populates her boldly-colored tableaus with characters from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Originally published privately as a majors-only tarot in a limited run of 500 copies, the deck was later expanded to 78 cards and picked up by U.S. Games Systems for mass market distribution. The majors-only edition uses black borders around the full circumference of the cards, with titles in English at the top and Spanish at the bottom. The U.s. Games edition removes the full black border, placing only a black box at the bottom of each card in which both the English and Spanish titles are provided. In the USG edition, the cards are trimmed with gold-gilt edging. The court cards retain the titles of Page, Knight, Queen, and King, but the ranking of Queen and King is implied to be reversed, per the description order in the guidebooklet.
