This pack incorporates Templar, Grail, and Gnostic images. The story follows the initiation of a Templar brother. The major and minor suits of each arcana join up to create a freize. The suit titles are Lances (= Wands), Vessels (= Cups), Swords, and Stone (= Pentacles). The court cards are Brother (= Page/Princess), Preceptor (= Knight), Lady (= Queen), and Master (= King). Originally issued by St. Martin's Press in 2007, the set was out of print for several years, until it was picked up by Red Feather for republication in 2020.

I was very much looking forward to this deck. The artwork is lovely, and the concept of each suit’s cards connecting one to the other visually to create a continuous tableau is beautifully executed. Unfortunately, the cardstock weight is noticeably thin, bendy, and too easy to fold. That’s a shame for this marvelous artwork. I was very disappointed in the system. The majors are retitled and the suit meanings shifted so much that feels more like a completely foreign card system, not tarot. If you’re going to flip the elements around and rename everything, why call it tarot?! If you really love the grail stories, you may find unraveling a different system worthwhile. I didn’t. Too frustrating and disappointing. Matthews likes to flip elements, and I’ll think twice before buying another of his decks.
