The Sentient Tarot and Playing Cards

Multicultural- and mythological-themed deck, originally inspired by the work of J.R.R. Tolkein but later pivoted to a more generic iconography after the creators failed to receive the necessary permissions from the Tolkein estate. As the title suggests, the cards are designed to allow users to alternatively use the deck as a tarot and as a standard pack of playing cards. As such, the full structure includes 22 major arcana cards (all unnumbered); 40 ace - ten "pip" cards (i.e., non-scenic suits) using the playing card designations of Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds; 16 court cards which are designated "King", "Queen", "Jack" and "Princess"; and two "Joker" cards. originally released in 2022 in a black bordered box, the deck was re-released in 2024 in both a red- and a blue-bordered box. Each boxed printing was limited to a run of 500 copies. Our sample scans are taken from one of the black-bordered box copies.
