The story goes that Melissa Townsend's Tarot was originally drawn on the back of business cards from ‰"El Teddy‰'s", a New York restaurant where the artist did readings; thus, the deck is also known as "El Teddy's Tarot". All of the 78 cards are illustrated a bold, pen-and-ink style, and though somewhat based on the RWS imagery, they carry a more fanciful and modern feel.
