Self-described by artist Theresa Hutch as a "modern, minimalist" tarot, the simple imagery of the White Sage Tarot is not as sparse as those found in some decks that embrace a minimalist aesthetic. Nonetheless, those seeking cards packed with symbolic minutiae best look elsewhere. For the rest, Hutch's images are pleasing and emotionally evocative, their meanings clear to anyone familiar with the discipline. The deck's title arises from the association of sage with the ritual cleansing practice of "smudging". Sage sticks feature throughout, arranged and decorated in various ways throughout most of the minor arcana pips. The major arcana and court cards are dominated by totem animals, many of whom carry or hang from sticks of the titular sage. The accompanying booklet also encourages using the deck for chakra work.

Something sweet and soft, and sage

Posted by Kara Dahl Russell on Mar 27th 2024

I expected this deck to be sweet from the artwork. The pastel tones and paintings of animals make for a comforting deck. I should start by saying that nothing about this deck is a normal pick for me. I have asthma, and burning sage had always been horrible for me to be near, so I don’t have positive associations with sage, I don’t usually like pastel colored decks or animal decks, and this is a pup deck and I hate pips! But I kept coming back to this deck as a “missing voice” in my reading decks. I know it would resonate with many folks. The artwork is darling. Again, the LWB Of this deck does not include reversals so this adds to the gentle, supportive feel of this deck. As you would expect from the artwork, it reads softly. It can be read as a Marseilles deck. Do explore the LWB, it is written to be very supportive, positive, and encouraging. It supports a quiet and gentle reading vibe. The additional wisdom and meaning in this deck comes from its inclusion of chakra information on two additional cards, and a chakra layout which gives a completely added layer of information to add to the readings, another layer of wisdom, and stretching the knowledge base and study use of this tender deck. I do love a deck that has layers of meaning in the way it can be read!
